LITMUS DESIGNS & PRINTING SOLUTIONS - DESIGN OF SUCCESS

The origin Development and growth of this Banglore-based sticker manufacturer show how a progressive management behaves in a changing environment to take advantage of existing situations to become a class in itself.

IN SERVICE OF SOCIETY: Mr. Ramesh interacting with the then Karnatka Governor, Mrs. Ramadevi on Banglore City traffic problem in 2001, when he was the Vice-Chairman of traffic enginiers & trainers an, NGO.

K. V. Ramesh, Managing Director of Bangalore-based Punarvasu Graphics (PG) has interesting experience about bringing up a successful company in the screen-printing arena. His tryst with entrepreneurship is worth knowing what sheer determination and hard work could lead one who has ventured out to execute a dream of having something of his own. He, as if without much thought, started off with a small PCB making outfit back in 1982, on a small scale, at his house.

Though his father, Mr. K H. V. Dasappa, wasa film exhibitor with a theatre at Bangalore, he was never interested to follow the footsteps of business. Therefore, after his studies in electronics engineering and after a short stint as production manager with some companies, he thought of starting his own business and PCB making was off to a start.
His training at the local Small Industries Service Institute (SISI) in the filed of designing of PCB has given him the added knowledge and the necessary conviction that there is very good future out there. However, there were problems plenty. Even though his project forthe manufacture of PCB was approved by the bank, he was stuck due to the collateral security as he was not able to convince others. They thought he was young for an entrepreneur and without much confidence.

Best Supplier Award from Enercon systems in 2002

Omini Award from SGIA

A' class quality Supplier status given by many Customers
The manufacture of PCB was approved by the bank, he was stuck due to the collateral security as he was not able to convince others. They thought he was young for an entrepreneur and without much confidence. As a result, he went to work as production manager and gradually saved money and started his own screen printing unit as it was
the best to start off as the investment required was low. During his training at PCB, he had enough exposure to screen printing as it was also a part of it.

Punarvasu Graphics (PG), a proprietary concern as it is today, could be said to be started off from here in 1985 in a small way with a big ambition to serve electronic, electrical, machinery manufacturers in the area of improving aesthetic part of the equipment i.e. self-adhesive stickers.

As Mr Ramesh was from elctronics field, he started off serving electronics customers like L & T Printers. The company used panels in their products manufactured in Mysore. Soon we incorporated making polycarbonate labels and as it was ‘import substitute’ item at that time as most of such items were imported, we got instant acceptability.
PG has served many of the leading companies like BPL, IFB Bosch, Titan,TVS Electronics, English Electric, etc, and was the main supplier to Bush India.

The company has concentrated more on Quality, widened the range of stickers and labels for various industries. For example, it has also served Agarbatti companies, some of which has a requirement of over 1 crore stickers per month. The company has the facility to print from small sizes of 1 cm x 1 cm to big sizes like 6ft x 4ft etc.

In the year 1993, the company found itself in many hardships. In retrospect, it was a turning point. During the period the company faced a lot of crisis, like theft of raw material, leakage of secrets regarding manufacturing processes, trained staff leaving the company and becoming a competitor which even threatened its very survival.

It is at this point of time that Mr. Ramesh decided to change his way of management and trained himself in management by reading books and attending seminars. It helped him and the company lot. It made him think big and he decided to take the company on the road to progress and growth. He also decided to go for ISO certification and started working for the same.

Every employee is trained in professional, and personality development skills. It has a library which contains books, magazines and audio tapes which are useful to the employees and their families. As a mark towards environment friendly, PG has implemented rainwater harvesting.

The company boasts of 6,000 sq. ft. area production, 40 people working. The company’s main Customers are industrial Customers who are south based. After consolidation his position with its loyal Customers, Mr. Ramesh is seriously working to spread PG’s wings all over India. Mr. Ramesh is also Vice-Chairman of the Bangalore-based service oriented Non Government Organization (NGO) Traffic Engineers and Safety Trainers,(TEST) which creates awareness among road users and works with various government organizations to improve road safety.

There is another human side to the managing director. Mr Ramesh is also busy conducting / organising classes for stress management, time management, human behavioral skills at MNC companies. He considers it as a small service to the society from his side. “Some sort of giving back to the society whatever one can as a tribute.” Mr. Ramesh quotes his success as, “All my success is due to my dedication to work, determination on goal, discipline in everything, devotion to learn, hard work and continuous support/inspiration from my wife and blessings of elders.”
