INDIA OPENS UP FOR THE LABEL INDUSTRY

The timing of Label Summit India 2006, scheduled for February in the country’s financial capital is perfect as it showcases its products at a time when India is beginning to open up. Thanks to the retail push that the government is giving recently, big brand owners such as Wal-Mart, SABMiller, and many others, have been negotiating with the government, and India is set to allow foreign investment in retailing.

According to sources at Wal-Mart, the average urban household income in India is about $3,000 a year, roughly in line with China, and the consuming class has grown from 35 million families in 1996 to an expected 80 million this year. That’s roughly in line with the US.

With massive international investment bound to find its way to India, Labelexpo’s move into India could not be timelier. Label Summit India will combine a high-level educative and training-led conference (with master classes) and a tabletop exhibition.

Topics to be covered include: added value opportunities with pressure-sensitive labels; markets and applications for filmic label substrates; the use of variably printed labels for logistics and distribution; the opportunities and potential in India for RFID smart labels; the nature and use of digital label printing technology; and developments in security labels and solutions.
Label Summit India will bring international label industry suppliers, converters and key end-users from the branded goods, retail groups, consumer products and distribution
sectors together to educate and train all levels in the label supply and usage chain in a number of major areas of new label technology and label growth potential. This is the first and only event of its kind to take place in India.
Roger Pellow, Labelexpo Managing Director, said, “India is opening up to the international retail market, and the opportunities for the label industry are immense.”
